General Army ROTC Options

ROTC is traditionally a four-year program which is divided into two courses: basic and advanced. Students who decide to enter the program later in their college careers may need two to three years depending on the courses they have already taken.

Basic Course
Normally taken during the freshman and sophomore years, the Basic Course includes classroom studies in subjects such as military history, leadership development, basic map reading, first aid and national defense. Participants also gain practical experience in drill and ceremony, rappelling and marksmanship. There is no commitment for these first two years, provided you don't have an ROTC scholarship.

Advanced Course
Upon successful completion of the Basic Course, you will be eligible to compete for entrance into the Advanced Course. You may also be eligible for the Advanced Course if you have prior military experience or enter the program later in your college career.

If selected for this advanced training, you will receive an allowance of up to $2000 each year, while further developing your leadership, organizational and management skills. Your instruction will go beyond the classroom to help you develop a keen sense of responsibility and self-discipline — and gain practical experience that will serve you well in the military or in your civilian career.

During the summer between your first and second years of the Advanced Course, you will attend a fully paid, five-week Advanced Camp, where you will put into practice the principles, theories and decision-making skills you learned in the classroom.

Here, you'll plan and execute tactical missions, serve in leadership positions that require you to shoulder more responsibility and leave with increased confidence in your ability as a leader.
