Helicopter Flight Training Program Options
The UND Army ROTC Helicopter Flight Training Program allows you to continue your flight certifications and go to college at the same time. Cadets earn FAA private helicopter, commercial helicopter and instruments ratings.
The Three-Year Option
The three-year program pays over $77,000 in flight fees. Participants earn their FAA private helicopter, commercial and instrument ratings, with approximately 50 hours of fixed wing (at own expense) and 140 hours of helicopter flight training time. The curriculum includes:
- Sophomore year Private Helicopter
- Junior year Commercial Helicopter
- Senior year Instrument Rating
- Graduation Commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army
Aircraft Flown
The U.S. Army has the sexiest, most sophisticated, high-tech fleet of helicopters in the world. In the UND program, you'll fly the Schweitzer 300 and Bell 206. Other Army aircraft include:
- AH-64D Apache Longbow
- AH-64A Apache
- UH-60 Series Black Hawk
- OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Scouts
- RAH-66 Comanche
General Program Requirements
- Contract with Army ROTC either under a scholarship or SMP program (2-3 years remaining at UND)
- A fixed-wing rating (Private - three-year program) (Commercial/Instrument - two-year program)
- Passing marks on the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) and Army Class 1A Flight Physical
- A minimum score of 90 on the Army Aviation Flight Aptitude Test (AFAST)
- Military Science Class GPA & ROTC involvement (if attended ROTC classes)
- Overall GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
- ACT score of 19 or above
- Leadership potential
